Coming to the US

According to Wilmer Gutierrez, Merwil’s father, he brought his then 17 year old son with him when he left Venezuela after the death of Merwil’s mother.  When they arrived at the border,they applied for asylum and were bussed to New York where they found work at a wholesale food distribution warehouse.  They rented an apartment and awaited their immigration court dates. Merwil had a pending asylum hearing.

Detainment and Expulsion

According to neighbors who observed the arrest, Merwil was seen handcuffed outside their building in the Bronx before being led away.  Wilmer went to find his son at the 52nd precinct, but it was too late. He was told to check with the immigration court at Federal Plaza, but was told there was no record of Merwil being there.  Days later, Merwil called Wilmer from a detention center in Pennsylvania.  A few days later, Merwil was in a Texas detention center.  The last time Wilmer heard from Merwil was on March 15.  Merwil’s name was later revealed on a list of men sent to El Salvador. In spite of having an attorney, Wilmer said he has no idea how his son is doing.
