Richard Alexander Duarte Rodriguez came into the US in 2024 and received a temporary work permit. In March, in spite of having no criminal record, he was sent to CECOT in ElSalvador.

What is known about Duarte

According to Duarte’s father and uncle who were interviewed by Venezolana de Television (VTV), Richard Duarte emigrated to the US through the Darien jungle in search of a supposed “better future.” His family fervently defends his integrity and honesty affirming that Duarte has never been involved in any criminal activity. In March he was detained and sent to El Salvador before being included in the flight to CECOT in El Salvador.

His uncle describes him as a hardworking, honest, healthy boy who is missed by his family and friends. He demanded President Bukele realize that not all of the men sent to El Salvador are criminals. Duarte’s close friend, Jorge Ramirez, also describes him as an upright character who is a migrant not a criminal. Neighbors in his San Bernardino parish in Venezuela have joined in rejecting the arbitrary measure which has generated concern and a call for justice.
